Senses Flashcards
exteroceptors
detect stimuli from outside the body (eg taste, hearing, vision)
interoceptors
receive stimuli from inside the body (eg change in blood pressure)
chemoreceptors
respond to nearby chemicals (eg pain receptors)
photoreceptors
respond to light energy
mechanoreceptors
respond to mechanical
thermoreceptors
stimulated by temperature changes (in hypothalamus)
sensation step 1/4
receptors respond to stimuli
sensation step 2/4
nerve impulses travel to cerebral cortex
sensation step 3/4
brain interprets info
sensation step 4/4
sensation/conscious perception occurs
umami
meaty/savory taste
smell receptors
olfactory cell (modified neurons, specific) - olfactory bulb connects w/limbic system (emotion + memory)
anterior chamber of the eye
between cornea and lens; aqueous humor fluid
posterior chamber
most of eye; vitreous humor behind lens
sclera
white/fibrous part of the eye except cornea; maintains eye shape
- includes cornea and pupil
choroid
darkly pigmented vascular layer
- absorbs light rays not absorbed by retina
- includes iris and ciliary body (muscle that control shape of lens)
retina
inner layer containing photoreceptors
