What is the purpose of sectioning under the Mental Health Act?

A

To admit someone who will not be admitted voluntarily.

The MHA Act and Assessment
 Mental Health Act 1983, amended by the Mental Health Act 2007 (further amendment in 2012):
o Used when no capacity
o Used only regarding mental health conditions
o Provides powers to admit people living in the community to hospital by force o For all ages
Principle of sectioning
 Sectioning is always a last resort – should always aim for an informal admission where possible (talk to patient, bring in relative etc)
 If, after this, section if:
o they do not agree
o AND they pose an immediate risk to themselves or others then
