What is psychosis?
A term used to describe a person experiencing things differently from those around them.
What are the psychotic features?
Hallucinations, delusions, thought disorganisation, alogia, tangentiality, clanging, word salad.
What is alogia?
Little information conveyed by speech.
What is tangentiality?
Answers diverge from the topic.
What is clanging?
Speech pattern where words are chosen for their sound rather than meaning.
What is word salad?
Linking real words incoherently, resulting in nonsensical content.
What are the associated features of psychosis?
Agitation/aggression, neurocognitive impairment, depression, thoughts of self-harm.
In which conditions may psychotic symptoms occur?
Schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, puerperal psychosis, brief psychotic disorder, neurological conditions, prescribed drugs, certain illicit drugs.
What is the most common psychotic disorder?
Schizophrenia.
What subtype of depression may include psychotic symptoms and is more common in elderly patients?
Psychotic depression.
What is puerperal psychosis?
Psychosis occurring shortly after childbirth.
What is a brief psychotic disorder?
A disorder where symptoms last less than a month.
What neurological conditions can cause psychotic symptoms?
Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease.
What prescribed drugs can cause psychotic symptoms?
Corticosteroids.
What illicit drugs can cause psychotic symptoms?
Cannabis, phencyclidine.
