Screening for disease as people age Flashcards
Population health screening
asymptomatic, invited, tests, detect disease earlier, reduce bad outcomes from the disease
Screening
organised programme identifying disease earlier in healthy people in defined population to offer appropriate treatment to reduce risk from disease or condition.
Process of screening
1.choose subset of population
2.some people accept the invitation then the screening test is done which identifies those with further investigation.
3.people in the sieve are at increased risk of the condition being screened for will be offered further tests.
4.people who pass sieve are discharged from the screen-same risk as rest of the population
3 ways screening is beneficial?
-detect disease latent stage-but no symptoms
-detect disease earlier -treatment is effective, fewer side effects
-people live longer-mortality also morbidity as better quality of life
how does screening harm people?
-incorrect test results: false positive and false negative
what are 4 things on Wilson and Jungers criteria?
-the condition should be important health problem
-natural history of the condition should be understood
-should be a recognisable latent or early symptomatic stage
-should be an accurate test
