A

The death of the Sultan of Perak in 1871 led to a power struggle. Chinese secret societies had also grown influential in the area. As a result, Sir Andrew Clarke was sent there to resolve the situation - the Treaty of Pangkor resulted in the ultimate control of a British Resident there in spite of the Sultan.
