Science, Physics - Earth and Beyond Flashcards
1
Q
order of planets
A
- mercury
- venus
- earth
- mars
- jupiter
- saturn
- uranus
- neptune
2
Q
moon
A
- an object that orbits a planet
- known a natural satellite
3
Q
earth rotating
A
- spins anti clockwise
- sun rise = east
- sun set = west
4
Q
tilt of the axis
A
- 23.5 degrees
- nearer the equator, not much change for seasons
- nearer the poles, a lot of change for seasons
- changes day lengths and temperatures
5
Q
inner planets
A
- 4 of them (mercury, venus, earth, mars)
- terrestrial plants = made of rock
6
Q
asteroid belt
A
- pieces of planets or moons / lumps of rock left over from when the Solar System was formed
- orbit the sun like planets do
- in between mars and jupiter / inner and outer planets
7
Q
outer planets
A
- 4 of them (jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune)
- bigger than the inner planets
- jupiter and saturn = gas giants (mainly made of hydron and helium gas)
- uranus and neptune = ice giants (ice and rock with an other layer of gas and are the coldest atmosphere)
- other plants all have rings
- rings are made out of dust, ice particles, and pieces of rock
8
Q
comets
A
- made of ice and dust orbiting the sun
- reflect light from the sun (like planets and moons)
9
Q
meteor
A
piece of rock at burns up
10
Q
meteorite
A
- a piece of rock that survives to reach the ground
11
Q
planets
A
- not stars
- objects that orbit around stars
- made of rock or gas
12
Q
stars
A
- huge balls of gas that give out light
13
Q
sun
A
- has a life cycle
- made from cloud of gas and dust called nebula
- main sequence star
