Geography - Maps Flashcards
When the contour lines are close together it means?
that part of the mountain is fairly steep
C.S
Relief
refers to the highest and lowest elevation points in an area.
Spot heights
- exact height of a place on a map in meters above sea level
- usually written in black.
Triangulation Pillars
- Triangulation pillars also show height
- usually at a high spot on the land
- drawn as a dot inside a blue triangle on the map
Layer Shading
- shown in different colours
- need a key
- layer contouring can tell you a good deal about the shape of the land.
Contour Lines
- a line on a map joining points
- equal height above or below sea level.
Grid reference
Along the corridor and up the stairs
Latitude
- runs across the map
- measured in degrees
- north to south
- they are parallel
- decrease in length towards the Poles
Longitude
- run up and down the map
- measured in degrees
- east to west
- meet at the poles
- all the same length
How to measure the distance:
Using a scale line
Straight line distances:
To measure using the straight-line method. Measure from the starting point to the finishing point. Once you do that you need to put it on a scale line and get the distance
Curved distances:
With curved distances, you need to measure point by point. (A-B, B-C, C-D.eg). After that is done, you once again measure it on the scale line to get the distance.
(Contour lines)
The higher the number the…
the higher the top is.
What does key mean:
- a list of symbols that appear on the map
Layer shading:
