Schizophrenia
Distorted and bizarre thoughts, perceptions, emotions, movements, behavior
Positive/hard symptoms of schizophrenia
Hallucinations, delusions, disturbed thoughts, echopraxia, flight of ideas, ideas of reference, perseveration
Negative/Soft symptoms of schizophrenia
Flat affect, anhedonia, alogia,apathy, lack of volition, ambivalence, blunted affect, catatonia, social withdrawal
Schizoaffective disorder
mixture of psychotic mood symptoms, usually schizophrenia & a mood disorder
Schizoaffective treatment
Second-generation antipsychotics, mood stabilizers added if needed
Schizopreniform disorder
related to but distinguished from schizophrenia due to duration & symptoms
Schizopreniform lasts how long?
less than 6 months. If longer then it can be diagnosed as schizophrenia
Is social or occupational functioning effected by schizopreniform?
may or may not be
Catatonic type of schizophrenia
thick stooper, mute, doesn’t respond to painful stimuli
hypertensive crisis
when MAOIs are taken and tyramine-containing foods are ingested.
hypertensive crisis s/s
headache, hypertension, n/v, chills, sweating, restlessness, nuchal rigidity, dilated pupils, fever, motor agitation
Serotonin syndrome
when SSRIs & MAOIs are taken together
Serotonin syndrome s/s
confused, agitated, muscle rigidity, weakness, sluggish pupils, shivering, tremors, myoclonic jerks, hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, diaphoresis
Bipolar I disorder
manic episodes with at least one depressive episode
Bipolar II disorder
Recurrent depressive episodes with at least one hypomanic episode
