What medication is given with Lithium to calm the patient down until the lithium kicks in?
Risperdol

When a patient is on Lithium, what test is required?
blood level testing
Lithium side effects
Nausea, fatigue, tremor, thirst, edema, weight gain
Early signs of Lithium poisoning (1.5-2 mEq/L)
N, V, severe diarrhea, lethargy, muscle twitching, progress to ataxia, slurred speech
S/s of Lithium poisoning when level is 2.0-3.5 mEq/L
Excessive output of dilute urine, increasing tremors, muscular irritability, psychomotor retardation, mental confusion, giddiness. This could be overlooked as manic behavior
s/s of Lithium poisoning when level is above 3.5 mEq/L
Impaired consciousness, Nystagmus,seizures, coma, oliguria, anuria, arrhythmias, MI, Myocardial collapse, death
Bipolar disorder
extreme mood swings from mania to depression, onset usually in early 20s, manic episodes begin suddenly
chromosome that is effected by bipolar

Agents that are helpful in reducing manic behavoir and protect against bipolar depressive cycles
Olanzapine (Zyprexa) & Quetiapine (Seroquel)
Psychotherapy is only useful when?
in mildly depressed or normal portion of bipolar cycle. Its not useful during manic behavior
