Abstract thinking
ability to make associations or interpretations about a situation or comment
Concrete thinking
when the client continually gives literal translations; abstraction is diminished or absent
Agoraphobia
fear of being outside
Akathisia
Intense need to move about
Akinesia
partial or complete loss or suppression of muscle movement (Absence of movement)
Alogia
a lack of any real meaning or substance in what the client says
ambivalence
coexistence of contradictory feelings about an object, person, idea
Anhedonia
Having no pleasure or joy in life, loosing any sense of pleasure from activities formerly enjoyed
Anxiety state
a condition marked by more or less continuous anxiety and apprehension
Apathy
indifference, insensibility,lack of emotion
apraxia
impaired ability to execute motor functions despite intact motor abilities
catatonia
psychomotor disturbance, either motionless or excessive motor
Clang association
an unusual speech pattern seen in decompensated psychoses in which words rhyme or sound alike “Mr.bang sang, tang, clang”
Confabulation
clients may make up answers to fill in memory gaps, associated with organic brain problems
counter transference
occurs when the therapist displaces onto the client attitudes or feelings from his or her past.
transference
occurs when the client displaces onto the therapist attitudes and feelings that the client originally experienced in other relationships
Delirium
a syndrome that involves a disturbance of consciousness accompanied by a change in cognition
Dementia
A mental disorder that involves multiple cognitive deficits
Delusion
A fixed, false belief not based in reality

Hallucinations
false sensory perceptions or perceptual experiences that do not really exist
Hypervigilance
excessive attentiveness to stimuli

clients inaccurate interpretation that general events are personally directed to him or her, such as hearing a speech on the news and believing the message has personal meaning
labile
rapidly changing or fluctuating such as someones mood or emotions
neologism
invented words that have meaning only for the client

Persecutory delusions
A delusion in which patients believe people or agencies are seeking to injure or harass them
Perseveration
abnormal compulsive & inappropriate repetition of words or behaviors
polydipsia

the mental state of being devoid of thought and having a feeling of emptiness
Psychomotor agitation
increased body movements&thoughts

Tardive Dysinesia
A late-onset, irreversible neurologic side effect of antipsychotic meds, abnormal movements such as lip smacking, tongue protrusion
thought broadcasting
a delusional belief that others can hear or know what the client is thinking
Torticollis
stiff neck associated with muscle spasm
Waxy flexibility
maintenance of posture or position over time even when it is awkward or uncomfortable
Word salad
flow of unconnected words that convey meaning to the listener
