Helps designers identify a target market. They will gather opinions & comments from consumers about their interests in the new product

Collecting data first-hand
Eg. Interviews, questionaires, surveys
Primary data adv & disadv
Adv: data is up to date. Questions can be tailored to specific needs
Disadv: large no. of ppl needed. Data gathering time is consuming
Secondary data
Accessing info collected by others
Eg. Articles, magazines
Secondary data adv & disadv
Adv: data is already collected & available. Less time consuming
Disadv: data may not be up to date. Data may not be specific to company needs
