SB2e - The Brain Flashcards
What happens once an embryo is three weeks old
The stem cells in the brain start to produce neurones
How many neurones does an adult brain have?
Around 86 billion
Where is the cerebellum?
At the base of the brain near the spinal cord
Where is the cerebral cortex?
At the front of the brain divided into two cerebral hemispheres
Where is the medulla oblongata?
Just above the spinal cord near the cerebellum
What percentage of the brain does the cerebral cortex make up?
80%
What is the cerebral cortex for?
Controlling our senses, language, memory behaviour and consciousness ( inner thoughts and feelings)
What is different about the function of each cerebral hemisphere?
The right hemisphere communicate with the left side of the body and the left cerebral hemisphere communicates with the. Left side of the body
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls balance, posture and coordinates timing and fine control of muscle activity making sure movements are smooth
What does the medulla oblongata do?
Controls heart rate, breathing rate and is responsible for reflexes like vomiting, sneezing and swallowing.
What connects the brain to the spinal cord?
The mass of neurones that make up the medulla oblongata
What is the spinal chord made of?
A bundle of neurones that make up nerves
How thick is the spinal chord?
About the width of a finger
What does the spinal chord do?
Carries information between the brain and the rest of the body
What does the form of the brain control?
Emotions, learning and personality
