SB1i - Transporting Substances: Osmosis Flashcards
What is the definition of osmosis?
The diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
What concentration do dilute solutions contain?
A high water concentration
What do partially permeable membranes do?
Allow some molecules to pass through
What is osmosis simply?
The diffusion of water
What kind of solution of the cell’s cytoplasm?
Relatively concentrated
What happens when putting an animal cell in water?
Osmosis happens and water moves from the outside of the cell where concentration is lower and into the cell where the concentration is higher and there is less water causing the cell to expand
What happens when you put an animal cell into a more concentrated solution
Water will move out if the cell where concentration is higher and the ceiling will shrink
after putting a plant cell in water, what prevents it from bursting?
It’s cell wall
What is it called when a cell becomes swollen?
Turgid
What does a flaccid cell mean?
A cell that has shrunk as water has moved out of it to an area of higher concentration
