SB2b - Growth In animals Flashcards
What is growth?
The increase in the number of cells in an organism
How can you measure the growth of an organism?
By looking at height, foot size e.c.t.
What do the curved lines on a percentile chart show?
The rate of growth of a baby who stays at exactly the same percentile within the population
Why does a babies mass get plotted?
To help identify if they are growing properly
What should the rate of growth for a baby do as it gets older?
Should remain near the same percentile curve
Why is growth not recorded for a babies first two weeks of life?
They often loose weight as they adjust to feeding from the breast or bottle instead if nutrients from the placenta
How are percentile growth charts created?
By measuring a very large number of babies and dividing it into 100 groups to find the percentile
What is the percentile?
The percentage of readings below a certain value
What do all animals develop from?
A single cell
What is differentiation?
The process that changes less specialised cells into more specialised ones
What does a red blood cell do and how is it specialised?
Carries oxygen due to the large surface area for more to pass through
What does an egg cell do and how is it specialised?
A female sex cell. Specialised by having a lot of cytoplasm so the sperm cell can easily embed its self
What does a fat cell do and how is it specialised?
Provides the body with insulation and energy by its cytoplasm being filled with lathe fat droplets
