SB2c - Growth In Plants Flashcards
What is a meristem cell and how is it specialised?
An undifferentiated (non-specialised) so can rise to any type of cell and is found in zones were plant growth takes place like shoots and roots
What are root hair cells and how are they specialised?
Absorbs minerals and water from the soil with a large surface area to absorb as much water as possible and thin cell wall allows water to go through easily
What is special about root hair cells?
They don’t have chloroplasts
What are xylem cells and how are they specialised?
Involved in the movement of water through a plant and have a thick strengthened cell wall with a hollow middle so water can travel through them
What are palisade cells?
Used to carry out photosynthesis and are specialised by being at the top of the leaf, having a large surface area and being high in chloroplasts to absorb as much sunlight as possible
What two processes result in the growth of a seedling?
Cell division and cell elongation?
What is cell elongation?
Where the cell wall loosens like between cellulose molecules allowing water to enter the cell and causing the vacuole and cytoplasm to expand
When does cell elongation in plants happen?
After mitosis
What part of the shoot or root tip does cell division happen?
Meristem cell
What is differentiation?
The process resulting in cells becoming different from each other
How can percentage change be calculated?
