How to perform a safelight check

A
  1. under dark conditions, place lead characters on the film, each one one-third of the film length
  2. Place an opaque covering two-thirds of the film, under a safelight for 15 minutes
  3. move opaque to cover additional third, leave under light for 15 minutes more
  4. move off the opaque to cover rest of film under light for 15 more minutes
  5. process film and evaluate.

How to tell if a safelight is to excessive/inadequate?

A

transparent base of the film would have a measurable density that what would normally be measured.
