Absorption and Attenuation (2) Flashcards
Linear Attenuation
As radiation travels through a material it decreases the overall intensity of the radiation beam.
What is the Linear Absorption Coefficient?
Depends on the material density and energy of the x or gamma ray.
Indicates that there is a constant fractional decrease in radiation intensity due to material thickness.
What occurs for Material Absorption and shielding to occur?
Radiation interacts with the matter it has encountered.
The more dense the material the ___ _____ will occur
more absorption will occur
What is a Value Layer?
The effectiveness of a material to absorb or shield radiation reducing its intensity. (attenuation factor)
Half-Value Layer
Thickness required of a material to reduce initial radiation intensity by half the original
Tenth-Value Layer
Thickness required of a material to reduce initial radiation intensity by 1/10 the original.
