Down the Midline
Major renal vein, testicular vein and Renal vein
What are differences in renal drainage between the 3 sides?
On the LHS: All veins merge into 1 as drain into IVC
RHS: All drain separately
Which adrenal gland is more tucked away and posterior to the IVC?
Right adrenal gland
What are the functions of the kidneys?
1) Filter and excrete waste products from blood
2) H2O and electrolyte balance
What is found at the renal hilum?
Renal veins and arteries, ureter, nerves and lymphatics
Which structure runs most posterior from kidneys?
Ureter (Water under the bridge)
What are the 3 layers of the kidney?
Cortex, Medulla and Pelvis
What are the retroperitoneal branches of the aorta?
Aorta –> E&I Iliac Artery –> Femoral Artery and Int. Epigastric
(Internal 1) Anterior 2) Placental)
What are the arterial branches of the kidney?
Aorta –> Renal Artery –> Interlobar –> Arcuate –> Interlobular –> Afferent arteriole
Which renal artery is longer?
RHS as aorta is slightly to left and crosses IVC posteriorly
What are the posterior and anterior relations to kidneys?
Posterior: Diaphragm, psoas major, quadratus lumborum, transv. abdominis
R Anterior: Liver, duodenum, coils of int.
L Anterior: Stom, spleen, panc, coils of int.
