Basic Brain structure Flashcards
What are the Gyri and Sulci?
G: Rolls of Cerebral cortex
S: Depressions between gyri
What are the 3 main fissures/sulci and what do they separate?
1) Longitudinal (R&L)
2) Lateral (T from F&P)
3) Central: Frontal and Parietal
What is the role of the insula?
Portion of cerebral cortex folded deep in lateral sulcus, forming floor of lateral sulcus
What structure is made of white matter and holds the hemisphere’s together?
Corpus Callosum
Where are Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas found?
B: Frontal Lobe (Language prod)
W: Temporal Lobe (Language reception)
Where is the primary motor cortex found?
Pre-central gyrus of frontal lobe
Frontal lobe functions?
Motor, problem solving, judgement, personality, social/sexual behaviours
Pre-frontal cortex role?
Higher cognitive functions e.g. personality
Where is the primary S-S cortex found?
Post-central gyrus of Parietal Lobe
Function of Parietal Lobe?
Somatosensory. (Dominant: Perception, interpretation of sensory info, language and mathematical)
Non Dominant: Visiospatial
Role of Temporal Lobe?
Primary auditory cortex (Hearing, and language comprehension)
Role of occipital Lobe?
Primary visual and vision association cortex
Role of Hippocampus?
Long term memories
What are the 3 horns of the lateral ventricle?
Anterior, posterior and inferior
Passage of CSF?
Lateral Ventricle to 3rd Ventricle (Through foramen of Munro) down Cerebral Aqueduct into 4th ventricle, and then through the 2 foramina (Luschka and Magendie)
State where the choroid plexus is found?
Along choroid fissure of lateral ventricle, and roof of 3rd and 4th ventricle
How does CSF get reabsorbed into the dural venous sinuses?
Via Arachnoid Granulations
Through endothelium into the dural venous sinus
What is contained in the brainstem?
Midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata
What forms the dorsal midbrain and what is it composed of?
Tectum, composed of inferior and superior colliculi
