Q

Cause of retinal detachment?

A

Usually due to retinal tear

-This allows vitreous fluid to get under retina & fill space between retina & the choroid

Q

What does the outer retina rely on?

A

Blood vessels of the choroid for the blood supply therefore sight threatening

A

Painless condition

  • Peripheral vision: shadow coming across vision
  • Blurred or distorted vision

Q

General management of retinal detachment?

A

Detailed assessment of retina

-Aim to reattach retina & reduce traction or pressure that may cause it to detach again

A

Removing relevant part of vitreous body and replacing with oil or gas

Q

What is scleral buckling?

A

Involves using silicone buckle to put pressure on outside of eye (Sclera) so that the outer eye indents to bring choroid back & in contact with detached retina

Q

What is pneumatic retinopexy?

A

Injecting gas bubble into V. body & positioning patient so gas bubble creates pressure that flattens retina against choroid and closes detachment

Q

Treatment of retinal detachment?

A

Surgery to reattach the retina

17
Q

Investigation of retinal detachment?

A

RAPD
May see tear on ophthalmoscopy
US B Scan can rule out retinal tears and detachment even with presence of vitreous haemorrhage
