Burns to the eye

What does acid do if in contact with eye?
A
Coagulates protein
Little penetration

How does alkali burn eye?
A
- Easy, rapid penetration
- Cicatrising changes to conjunctiva and cornea

Alkali burn will show evidence of?
A
ischaemia

Investigation of ocular burns?
A
Assess after thorough irrigation
History:
- Nature of chemical burn
- When
- Irrigation at event
- Beware lime/cement
Check Toxbase if available and pH
Once irrigated assess with slit lamp

Management for ocular burns?
A
Wash out immediately
- Minimum of 2 saline
- Or until pH is normal

What will alkali cause?
A
Limbus ischaemia
Meaning
It will never heal
