What is keratitis?
Inflammation of cornea
Often caused by corneal abrasion
Viral cause of keratitis?
Adenovirus
Herpes simplex
Bacterial causes of keratitis?
- Staph
- Strep
- Pseudomonas
- Acanthamoeba
- Herpetic
- Fungal
What type of people get acanthamoeba keratitis?
Contact lens wearers
Symptoms of keratitis?
- Pain (needle-like and severe)
- Photophobia
- Reduced visual acuity
- Epiphora (XS lacrimation)
- Red eye
- Opacity
- Bacterial (hypopyon)
- Herpetic (very painful)
- Fungal (slow growing)
Diagnosis of keratitis?
Fluorescein
Corneal scrape
Treatment of kertitis?
- Admission for hourly ofloxacin eye drops
- Gentamicin + cefuroxime: if strep pneumoniae
- Steroids
What is bacterial keratitis?
Infection of the cornea caused by bacteria
What do gram negative bacterial keratites tend to be caused by?
Contact lens related
Presentation of bacterial keratitis?
Hypopyon (pool of WBC)
Investigation for bacterial keratitis?
Corneal scrape
What is adenoviral keratitis?
Infection of cornea caused by adenovirus
Presentation of adenoviral keratitis?
Subepithelial infiltrates
- Bilateral
- Usually follows URTI
- Contagious
Treatment of adenoviral keratitis?
Antiviral (acyclovir)
-Steroid can speed up recovery if becomes chronic
What is fungal keratitis?
Infection of the cornea due to fungus
