What is a corneal abrasion?
Scratches or damage to cornea
-Cause of red, painful eye
Cause of corneal abrasion?
Contact lenses Eyelashes Entropion Finger nails Foreign bodies
If there is an abrasion associated with contacts what could that mean?
There may be a pseudomonas infection
What is an important DdX to consider in corneal abrasion?
Herpes keratitis
This requires antiviral drops
Presentation of corneal abrasion?
- History of contact lenses or foreign body
- Painful, red eye
- Foreign body sensation
- Blurring vision
- Photophobia
- Watering eye
Diagnosis/investigation of corneal abrasion?
- Fluorescein stain: this collects in abrasions or ulcers
- Slit lamps examination may be used in more significant abrasions
What colour is fluorescein stain?
Yellow orange colour
Initial management of corneal abrasions?
Refer to ophthalmologist for same day assessment
Secondary care of corneal abrasion?
- Simple analgesia
- Lubricating eye drops
- AB eye drops
- Bring patient back in 1 week
- Cyclopentolate eye drops dilate pupil & improve symptoms (photophobia)
How long does a corneal abrasion usually takes to heal?
2-3 days
