What does the upper airway consist of?
Pharynx, larynx and vocal cords.
What is part of the lower airway?
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
What is kyphosis?
Curving of the spine.
Hunch-back
Impairs patients ability to cough/clear airway.
What are kussmauls respirations?
Deep and rapid rate.
Acidosis
DKA.
What are biots?
Several short bursts/clusters of breath followed by periods of apnea.
What are some common obstructive disease?
COPD
Asthma
Anaphylaxis.
What is mild to moderate asthma?
Speaks in full or partial sentences.
RR greater than 40.
Exploratory wheezing leading to inspiratory.
What is severe asthma?
1 word sentences or unable to speak.
Slient chest or quiet wheezes
Altered mentation.
What is chronic bronchitis?
Persistent infection of the bronchi.
Blue boaters.
Productive cough.
What is emphysema?
Destruction of alveoli
Increased dead air space
Pink puffers
No secretions or cough.
What is pneumonia?
Bacterial or viral infection.
High grade fever is bacterial.
What is an empyema?
Collection of pus/exudates in pleural space.
Caused by lung infection that has spread.
Bacterial
Post-surgery
Trauma
Abscesses.
What is pleuritis?
Inflammation of the lining of the lungs. Cause chest pain with chest wall movement.
Does TB have a productive cough?
Yes!
