IV Therapy Flashcards
What is an isotonic solution?
That has an osmotic pressure equal to the osmotic pressure of normal body fluid.
What is a hypotonic solution?
A solution that has an osmotic pressure less than that of normal body fluid.
What is a hypertonic solution?
A solution that has an osmotic pressure greater than of body fluid?
What are some examples of Isotonic solutions?
0.9% NS - very common
2/3 - 1/3 - More common in hospitals for long term IV therapy
Ringers lactate - used for fluid replacement and electrolytes.
D5W - due to metabolism of glucose.
What is a hypotonic solution?
0.3% NS
What is a hypertonic solution?
Causes crenation. Shrink.
3.0% NS
What are some IV solutions?
Crystalloids
Colloids
Blood
Oxygen carrying fluids
What does colloids do?
Colloid solution do and therefore remain in the intravascular space for longer periods.
What are signs and symptoms of an air embolism?
Hypotension
Cyanosis
Tachycardia
Increased venous pressure
What is a pyrogenic reaction?
Occurs when foreign proteins, capable of producing fever are present in the admin set or IV solution.
