respiration Flashcards
what is aerobic respiration
releases energy in the presence of oxygen
where is aerobic respiration take place
mitochondria
why is respiration important
produce energy. energy can: growth, maintain body temperature, active transport, cell division, movement
what is anaerobic respiration
release energy from food without using oxygen
disadvantage of anaerobic respiration
it builds up lactic acid which needs to be removed with extra oxygen
what is respiratory surface
gas exchange surface
describe the airflow as it enters our body to alveoli
the air reach the lung through trachea. The bronchus is the first branch of the trachea. then it goes to bronchiole which is the final breach that leads to alveoli.
what happens in alveoli
oxygen diffuses into deoxygenated red blood cells then carbon dioxide diffuses out of red blood cells.
what do cilia do
trap microbes and dust away from the lung surface
what happens to the muscle and lung volume as we breathe in
external intercostal muscle contract (ex contact)
diaphragm muscle contract ( go down)
lung volume increases
air rushes in to fill the extra space
what happens to the muscle and lung volume as we breathe out
internal intercostal muscle relax
diaphragm relax
lung volume decreases
air is forced out
component of inhaled air
21% oxygen
0.04 % carbon dioxide
78% nitrogen
component of expired air
18 % oxygen 3% carbon dioxide 78 nitrogen water vapour saturated temperature 37 degrees celcius
what is a physical addiction
the body cannot function properly in the absence of the chemical because it has partly replaced a natural body chemical
effect of nicotine
it is a stimulant that makes the heart beat faster, raises blood pressure. and also cause addiction
