photosynthesis Flashcards
chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
proteins contain which elements
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen
glucose, starch and lipids contain which element
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
how to test leaves for starch
boil the leaf to break down cell wall and stop the action of enzymes. then put it in a warm ethanol to extract chlorophyll. then dip the leaf into warm water to allow penetration. then do iodine test.
requirement for photosynthesis
light, presence of chloroplast, supply of CO2 and water, suitable temperature of enzymes
what is waxy cuticle for
reduce water loss
feature of leaf structure for photosynthesis
upper epidermis- transparent to allow light to enter, but prevent pathogen to enter
palisade mesophyll - contain chloroplast, and the cells are densely packed to maximum the absorption of the light
spongy mesophyll- loosely packed to help diffusion of gas
stomata - allow carbon dioxide and oxygen to enter; placed in the lower epidermis to reduce water lose due to sun.
when is the guard cell closed ( flaccid)
in the night or whenever the plant has small amount of water.
what is limiting factor
the factor which controls the rate of overall process because it is nearest to its minimum value
what element does NPK fertiliser provide
nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
deficiencies of ions in plant
Magnesium - leaves turn yellow. it is used for making chlorophyll
nitrogen - stunted, weak stem, yellow leaves. it is required for many food molecules (protein)
what is the purpose of hydrogencarbonate indicator
to know the concentration of carbon dioxide
pH rises- purple ( less acidic)
normal - pink
pH falls- orange-yellow ( more acidic)
