enzymes Flashcards
Test for reducing sugar
Benedict’s test, add benedict’s reagent and heat in the boil water bath for 2-3 minutes. the solution turns brick-red if there is glucose
test for protein
add biuret reagent to the solution and gently shake. if the solution turns purple then there is a protein
test for starch
add iodine solution to the solution. shake the mixture gently. if there is starch, then the solution turn blue-black
test for lipids
ethanol is added to the solution and gently shaken. then it is poured into a test tube that contains an equal volume of distilled water. if there is lipid then the solution turn milky-white
test for vitamin C
add dcpip, the solution the colourless. the less the volume of dcpip is used for the colour change, the stronger the vitamin c solution.
what are enzymes
a protein that work as a biological catalyst
which enzyme break down fats, and its product
lipase, fatty acid and glycerol
which enzyme break down starch, and its product
amylase, maltose
what is denatured
if the enzyme is in a condition that is too high temperature, the enzyme gets denatured. if it gets denatured, their active site change shape and so that they can operate normally. once they get denatured, they can’t come back to original state
why a type of enzyme only work for specific molecules
each enzyme has its own unique active site that the substrate molecules can fit perfectly.
______ + enzyme then it becomes
________________
then product is formed
substrate,
enzyme-substrate complex
what effects the enzyme activity
temperature, pH, and surface area of the substrate
