Required Practical: Rate Of Reaction In Gases Flashcards
What is the reaction we are doing?
Magnesium + hydrochloric acid ——> magnesium chloride + hydrogen
What are we aiming to do with this reaction?
Measuring hydrogen produced
To find how the rate of reaction differs depending on the concentration of the chemicals
Step 1
50cm3 of HCl in conical flask
Step 2
Attach flask to a bung and delivery tube
Step 3
Place delivery tube into container tray with water
Step 4
Place upturned measuring cylinder filled with water over delivery tube
Step 5
Add stop or magnesium metal into the acid conical flask and begin stop watch
Step 6
Hydrogen produced which goes through delivery tube and trapped in measuring cylinder
So we measure volume of this every 10s until there is no more given off
Step 7
Repeat whole experiment using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid
Independent variable
Concentrations of hydrochloric acid
Control variable
Mass of magnesium, temperature, volume of hydrochloric acid
