Required Practical: Chromatography Flashcards
Step 1
Draw pencil line on chromatography paper 2cm up from bottom
Step 2
Mark 5 pencil spots at equal spaces across the line
Step 3
Use capillary tube to put a small spot of known food colours and unknown colours onto pencil spots
Step 4
Pour 1cm of water into beaker
Attach paper to a rod and lower it in the water so the bottom of it touches the water
Why can the sides of the beaker not touch sides of paper?
Intereses with the way water moves
Step 5
Put lid on beaker to stop evaporation of water
Step 6
Not move the beaker and wait for the water to travel up the paper
Step 7
Draw pencil line to mark where water reached on the paper
Hang paper up to dry
Step 8
Analyse unknown colour, who’s spots line up with the known colours
Showing what it’s a mixture of
Rf values
Ways we identify what the chemicals are in chromatography
Rf calculation
