Conservation of mass Flashcards
What does the law of conservation of mass mean?
No atoms are lost or made in a reaction
Instead the atoms form together in different ways to form products
How does the law of conservation of mass affect the masses in a reaction?
The total mass of reactants = total mass of products
How does the law of conservation of mass affect the Mr/Ar in a reaction?
The sum of the Mr/Ar of the reactants = the sum of the Mr/Ar of the products
Closed system
A system where when there’s a reaction, no substances can enter or leave
Open system
A system where substances can enter or leave during a reaction
How does an open system affect the conservation of mass?
A gas may leave, or a gas may enter.
It will look as if the mass has increased/ decreased
However the mass of the products is still the same if you include the escaped gas
