Properties of elements Flashcards
Group 1 properties
Soft and cut with a knife
Reacts rapidly with oxygen
Reacts rapidly with chlorine
Reacts rapidly with water
Group 1 reaction with water
Turns water into hydroxide, making it alkali
Forms hydrogen therefore there’s fizzing
Floats
Why does group 1 become more reactive going down?
To react, it loses an electron
Going down = more shells
More shells = more shielding between reacting outer electron and nucleuses
More shielding = easier to react
Group 7 properties
Forms molecules of 2 of the same to form covalent bond eg Cl2
Increased boiling and melting point going down
Forms covalent compounds with non metal atoms
Can displace a less reactive halogen from its salt compound
Why does group 7 become less reactive going down?
To react it gains electron
Going down = more shielding between the nucleus and reacting electron from other molecule
More shielding = less attraction = less reactive
