Metals/ metallic bonds Flashcards
1
Q
What happens when metals react?
A
They lose electrons to achieve a full outer shell
This gives them a positive charge
This also gives them the same structure as a group 0 noble gas
2
Q
Why do metals have high boiling points?
A
Lots of energy is needed to overcome the forces of attraction between the delocalised electrons and positive metal ions in metallic bonds
3
Q
Why can metals conduct electricity?
A
Because they have free moving delocalised electrons that can carry the charge
4
Q
Why are (pure) metals malleable?
A
Because they consist of layers of metal atoms that are the same size
When a force is applied, the layers of metal atoms can easily slide over each over
Thus making it malleable
