Required practical: making salts Flashcards
Step 1
Fill a beaker with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid: the limiting reactant
Place on top of a Bunsen burner
Step 2
Heat the acid until almost boiling (so it doesn’t boil over when other reactants added)
Step 3
Use a spatula to add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid whilst stirring with a glass rod
Step 4
Continue adding copper oxide if the solution remains blue, until some powder remains after stirring
This shows the reaction has stopped and all acid has reacted
Step 5
Use filtration to remove unreacted/ in excess copper oxide
We can use filtration as it’s insoluble (not reacted)
Step 6
Create crystals of salt using evaporation
Place over beaker of boiling water until half the solution remains
Step 7
Leave copper sulfate crystals in a cool place to crystallise
