"Required Practical 9: Sampling Organisms": Ecology. Flashcards
1
Q
What is the method for this pratical?
A
- Students work in groups of 3.
- Place at right angles 2 tape measures. (20m in length).
- In 2 bags are numbers 1 to 20. First student picks a number from the bag and moves to that point on one tape measure.
- Second student selects a number from their bag and moves to that point on the tape measure.
- Third student places a qudrat on the ground at the point where the 2 people are standing.
- Records the number of organism in the quadrat.
- Return to the bag and repeat nine more times for 10 samples.
- THIS IS AN ESTIMATE.

Q
How could we make this practical accurate?
A
- Increase number of quadrats thrown.
- ## Cover greater percentage of the area.

Q
What is the method for measuring the effect of a factor on the distrubution of a species?
A
- Use a transect line.
- Place a tape measure across the habitat.
- ## Use quadrat to investigate number of organisims at 1m intervals along the transect.
