What is one way fertility is treated?

A
  • FSH and LH are given to a women.
  • “Fertility drug”.
  • Causes women to ovulate more than usual.
  • Increases chances of becoming pregnant through sexual intercourse.

What is another way to treat fertility?

A

IVF.

  • Fertilisation takes place out of the body.
  • Mother is first treated with FSH and LH, causes several eggs to mature.
  • Eggs are collected from the mother.
  • Sperm from the father is collected and it is used to fertilise the egg in the labratory.
  • Fertilised eggs develop into embryos.
  • Once embryos develop inserted into the womens woumb.
  • Develop in the mother in the usual way.

What is the benefit of IVF and disadvantages?

A
  • Gives a women to have a chance to have a baby of her own.
  • Success rates are low.
  • Emotionally stressful.
  • Physical demanding on the mother.
    E.g: Treatment with fertilty drugs and collection of eggs.
  • Lead to multiple births- risky for mother and children.-
  • Not all embryos created will be transferred into the mother
    = Some embryos are destroyed (Unethical).
  • Expensive.(Money could be spent on other medical issues).
