Ecology: Sampling Organisms. Flashcards
1
Q
What is random sampling used for?
A
- Compare the number of organisms in different areas.
- Use quadrats: Count the number of organisms inside the quadrat.
- Used to sample plants or slow moving animals.
- Place randomly.
2
Q
How do we estimate the total population size of species in an area?
A
- Total Population Size: total area/area sampled x number of organisms of that species counted in the sample.
3
Q
When do we use sampling along a transect?
A
- Investigate whether the number of species change was we move across the habitat.
- Transect: Line such as tape measure or a rope, place it so it runs across the habitat.
4
Q
How do we use sampling along a transect?
A
- Place quadrats to count the number of organisms at intervals on the transect.
