Carbon Cycle: Flashcards
What is the carbon cycle?
1) Carbon Cycle starts with the co2 in the atmosphere.
2) Carbon dioxide enters the carbon cycle via photosynthesis in plants and algae.
3) Co2 returns to the atmosphere through aerobic respiration in the plants and algae.
4) Plants and Algae are eaten by animals and eaten by other animals.
5) Animals respire so some co2 is released into the atmosphere.
6) Animals release waste products such as faeces and Animals and Plants eventually die, carbon in waste products and dead remains.
7) Waste products and dead remains are broken down by microorganisms, bacteria and fungi. When decomposers respire the co2 in the dead remains and waste products is released.
8) Decomposers release mineral ions to the soil. Under certain conditions, decomposers cannot function properly, carbon in dead remains is slowly converted into fossil fuels and the co2 is trapped over millions of years.
9) Combustion of fossil fuels releases large amounts of co2.
