What is the The Endocrine System?
A
- How the body is controlled by hormones.
- Consists of a number of glands.
- Glands secrete hormones directly in the bloodstream and the blood carries the hormones all around the body.
- Each hormone acts on a specific target organ where it produces an effect.

What are the differences between The Endocrine System and The Nervous System?
A
- Nervous system uses electrical impulses that travel across neurons.
- The Endocrine System uses hormones which are chemicals that are carried in the blood stream.

Signalling in nervous system is extremely fast.
The Endocrine System produces a much slower effect and effect is more long lasting.

What are the key glands in The Endocrine System?
A
- Pancreas: Releases hormones that are involved in controlling the concentration of Glucose in the blood.
Ovaries + Testies: Release hormones involving puberty and in reproduction.
Thyroid Glands: Produces hormones involved in growth and regulating basal metabolic rate.
Adrenal Glands: Release hormone Adrenaline which is produced in times of stress or fear.
Pituitary Gland; Located in the brain and is master gland. Releases a number of different hormones into the blood depending on the conditions.
- Act on other glands and cause other hormones to be released. Can trigger a range of different effects in the body.
