Evidence for Evolution: Resistant Bacteria. Flashcards
1
Q
What are antibiotics?
A
- Drugs that can kill bacteria.
- E.g: Penicillin.
2
Q
How does anti-biotic resistance happens?
A
- Bacteria may develop random mutations in their DNA which Change characteristics.
- Result in the bacteria being Resistance to antibiotics.
- The antibiotics kill most of the bacteria however the resistance ones survives.
- Resistant bacteria reproduces without competition from other bacteria and all these bacteria has the gene for antibiotic resistance.
ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE STRAIN.

Q
What happens if a new antibiotic is formed?
A
- Kill the Bacteria.
- Occasionally: some bacteria may gain resistance to the different type of antibiotic and will reproduce.
- This process repeats until bacteria is resistance to lots of different antibiotics.
- SUPERBUGS.
E.g: MRSA.

Q
Is it uncommon for bacteria to form resistance?
A
Yes.
‘Partial Resistance’, only when they do.
By completing a complete course of antibiotics all bacteria can be killed.
