Superficial
Nearer to the surface
Example: The muscles of the arm are superficial to its bone (humerus).
Intermediate
Between superficial and deep structure
Example: The biceps muscle is intermediate between the skin and humerus.
Deep
Farther from the surface
Example: The humerus is deep in the arm muscles.
Medial
Nearer to median plane
Example: The 5th digit (little finger) is on the medial side of the hand.
Lateral
Farther from the median plane
Example: The 1st digit (thumb) is on the lateral side of the hand.
Superior (cranial)
Nearer to the head
Example: the heart is superior to the stomach.
Inferior (caudal)
Nearer to the feet
Example: the stomach is inferior to the heart.
Anterior (ventral)
Nearer to the front
Example: The toes are anterior to the ankle
Posterior (dorsal)
Nearer to the back
Example: The hell is posterior to the toes
Proximal
Nearer to the trunk or point of origin (e.g. of a limb)
Example: The elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Farther from trunk or point of origin
Example: Wrist is distal to the elbow
Palmar
Anterior hand (palm)
Dorsal (hand)
Posterior hand (dorsum)
Plantar
Inferior foot surface (sole)
Dorsal (foot)
Superior foot surface (dorsum)
