Ganglion
A collection of nerve cell bodies outside the CNS
What makes up the CNS?
Brain and spinal cord
What makes up the PNS? (two nervous systems)
SNS and ANS
Somatic nervous system is a subdivision of the peripheral nervous system. Responsible for voluntary control.
Autonomic nervous system is a component of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary physiologic process such as heart rate and blood pressure. It contains three subdivisions: Sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric.
Which nervous system has the ability to recover from injury?
PNS
Which vertebrae does the spinal cord terminate at?
L2 - the PNS continues along the rest of the vertebrae
Somatic
Provides sensory and motor information to all parts of the body at a conscious level
3 types of somatic sensory information
touch, pain, position sensations (proprioception)
Somatic motor information
Innervates skeletal muscles for voluntary and reflexive movements
Autonomic
Controls functions of the body not under conscious control
autonomic reflexes and visceral (smooth and cardiac muscles) function and pain
Sympathetic division
Dangerous and stressful situations (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic division
Relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger (rest and digest)
If you were treating someone with a spinal cord injury (within the CNS) at the level of the neck, do you think your patient will recover their full function in the area below the lesion?
No
