Contractions Flashcards
1
Q
4 types of contractions
A
Agonist, antagonist, synergist, stabiliser
2
Q
Agonist
A
Prime mover, main muscle responsible for movement
3
Q
Antagonist
A
Muscle that opposes the action of agonist muscle(s) – this can happen as a stretch / passive resistance. Can also happen as a co - contraction situation.
4
Q
Synergist
A
Muscle(s) that assist movements – generally poorer ability to work around the joint axis
5
Q
Stabiliser / fixator
A
Muscles that are dynamic stabilisers of a joint - they typically fix one part of the body to allow the primary joint to move
6
Q
Stabiliser / fixator
A
Muscles that are dynamic stabilisers of a joint - they typically fix one part of the body to allow the primary joint to move
