Peripheral NS - Week 3 Flashcards
Function of efferent neuron and which nerve root does it originate from?
Example of an effector organ and action produced.
Motor nerve that conveys neural impulses from CNS to effector organs (muscles and glands)
Form anterior (ventral) nerve root of spinal nerve
Skeletal muscle, contraction to lift something up.
Function of afferent neuron and which nerve root does it travel along?
Sensory nerve that conveys neural impulses to the CNS from the sensory receptors in various parts of the body (skin)
Towards CNS through posterior (dorsal) nerve root of the spinal nerve
What are the layers of a nerve from superficial to deep?
Nerve, epineurium, perineurium surround fascicle, fascicle containing nerve fibers, endoneurium, myelin sheath (Schwann cells), axon
What structures are also present on the epineurium?
Blood vessels that supply the nerve (vasa nervorum)
What are the cells that form the myelin sheath called
Schwann cells
