  • A person who commits a crime will store up bad karma
  • In the bible it says you reap what you sow
  • Forgiveness – “blessed are the merciful,” “ love your enemies,” it is not up to humans to judge each other, Jesus taught his followers to say the lord’s prayer which says “ forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us,”

  • Costs around 30,000 a year
  • Prisoners can learn other criminal methods inside
  • Most prisoners reoffend
  • Difficult to get a job on release
  • Relationships break down in prison

what are the alternatives to prison?

A
  • Community payback – 40-120 hours and involve compulsory supervised unpaid work which is set by the court
  • Electronic tagging – prisoners serving between 3 and 4 months can be released early provided they agree to a home detention curfew order, cheaper and less percentage commit crimes while tagged
  • Fines – can be used for a variety of offenses
  • Probation service – they supervise probation orders this is where the offender reports to the probation officer on a regular basis, supervise prisoners after they have been released from prison
  • Early release – given early release before they are eligible for parole, demonstrated good behaviour

What is life imprisonment?

  • Most severe punishment in Britain, the prisoner spends the rest of their life in prison, the average life sentence is 15 years before the criminal becomes eligible for parole
