Pulp and Root Morphology Flashcards
How can root canals vary?
Accessory canals
Bifurcating canals
Curved canals
What is required for adequate pre-operative assessment of the tooth?
Thorough knowledge of the anatomy of each tooth type (Common / typical and variations)
Clinical examination
Radiographic examination
What are the aims of creating an access cavity?
Open the entire pulp chamber
Locate all the canal orifices
Negotiate all canals to their apical foramen
Where relative to the tooth are access cavities located in anterior adn posterior teeth?
Anterior: More central with a long oval shape
Posterior: More mesial with a more rectangular shape
How should an access cavity be made?
Using a high speed tungsten carbide bur
Cut dry
Use the correct angle
Use long low speed bur when at the pulp chamber.
Cut on withdrawal stroke
Open the entire pulp chamber
Explore the pulp chamber to locate the orifices with DG16 endo explorer + 31LS excavator
Negotiate the canals with a small hand file
Why should tooth be cut while dry?
No need to cool the pulp
Better vision
No debris forced into the canals
What are some easy ways to locate canals?
Use a road map (Lines with the chamber entrance inside)
Trans-illuminate the floor of the pulp chamber to help locate the orifices
What is required from a pre-operative assessment?
Thorough knowledge of the anatomy of each tooth type (Common/typical, variation)
Clinical examination
Radiographic examination
