1
Q

What does the typical cumulative curve indicate?

A

Cumulative curve is steep early and dips prior to the adolescence growth spurt. The Graph always increases.

Has additional steepness around the plateau.

Q

What do scammon’s curves show?

A

Neural tissue grows quickest and is almost complete by age 6 years.

Maxillary curve follows the neural curve more closely than mandibular curve but both follows pretty closely.

4 key structures to study are maxilla, mandible, neural structures, and cranial case. Cephalocaudal gradient is important to understand.

Q

What methods of study are used to measure growth?

A

Anthropometry uses several landmarks to measure variation using facial proportions and is important for orthodontic measurements

Cephalometry uses x-rays for study of changes in facial landmarks.

3D imaging involves CBCT and axial CT. Axial CT is precise but CBCT is less expensive and has lower radiation dose.

Q

What happens to the mouth in achondroplasia?

A

In achondroplasia the mandible is in the right position but the maxilla is deficient in development. (class III malocclusion due to maxilla deficiency not mandible)

Q

How does the maxilla grow?

A

Aposition posteriorly and In tuberosity and the ANS with resorption anteriorly.

Vertically growth occurs via changes because of the nose and the nasal floor. On the oral side there is aposition and on nasal side there is resorption. This is necessary for sinus formation.

Bone is deposited at the same time for alveolar height formation for teeth to attach.
