pt 9 (gnotobiology) Flashcards
what is gnotobiology?
study of animals in which the micro fauna and micro flora are known; study of animals raised in the absence of microorganisms or in the presence of known microbial strains or communities
what is a conventional animal?
animals raised under standard conditions
what is a SPF animal? how different is it from a pathogen free animal?
May harbor disease-causing microbes, but not a particular one; Has no disease-causing microbes but may have other microbes
what is an axenic animal?
animal that is free of all known microorganisms and parasites
how are axenic animals obtained? what do they eat? how are they housed?
hysterectomy or c-section under aseptic conditions; sterile food; kept in sterile isolators with sterile bedding
name 4 ways axenic animals are automatically different than conventional animals
- no microbes
- kept in sterile environment
- different anatomy
- longer life spans
what is the difference between pathogen free and axenic animals?
has no disease-causing microbes but still may have other microbes
what is a gnotobiotic animal and how is it made and housed?
all microbes known; starts as axenic and inoculated with certain microorganisms
define COBS
- Born by Caesarean section
- Maintained in sterile environment
- Fed sterile food
- Kept in sterile isolators with sterile bedding
which type of animals are maintained in barrier systems? (isolators)
born by c-section
what chemical is used to sterilize transfer units for isolators? what precautions must be taken and why?
2% paracetic acid; carcinogenic - wear respirator, gloves, coveralls or apron
what is a transgenic animal? what is another term for this?
an animal that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome; knockout animal
