What is cognitive behavioural therapy? When is it used? How long does therapy normally go for?

  • Psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thoughts, beliefs and attitudes about relationship, view of the future, competency and self-worth
  • Depression, anxiety (and sometimes to complement schizophrenia therapy)
  • 10-20 weekly sessions

What is interpersonal therapy? When might it be used?

A
  • A combination psychotherapy focusing on the here-and-now (especially relationships) and assumes that interpersonal problems precipitate or perpetuate depression. Utilises strategies to evaluate interactions with others and how behaviours may alienate them
  • Bulimia, family therapy, depression, bipolar

What is dialectical behaviour therapy? When might it be used?

A
  • A psychotherapy where recent situations are explored along with potential solutions
  • Eating disorders, mood disorders, borderline personality disorders
