- internal, unwanted intrusive thoughts
- unpleasant and recurring
- cause anxiety
- e.g. worry of being contaminated by germs

Awareness
- that obsessions and compulsions are irrational, excessive and unreasonable

Hypervigilance
- constant alertness
- focused attention on potential hazards
- e.g. germs
